Surface Preparation
Thorough preparation of the surface is essential when hanging Lincrusta®. Remove old paper, wash down in order to remove old paste residues, dirt, grease, etc. Make good all imperfections and allow to dry before applying a coat of size.

Emulsion Painted Surfaces
Remove loose and flaking material to a sound firm edge. Fill surface irregularities and allow to dry, glass paper smooth and dust off. Priming with an Oil Based Primer is recommended for best results.

Gloss and Oil Painted Surfaces
Wash with detergent solution to remove surface contamination and thoroughly abrade to provide a key. Make good imperfections and allow to dry.

Porous Surface (e.g. New Plaster)
Should be given a coat of size.

ENSURE THAT ALL SURFACES ARE CLEAN, FIRM AND DRY


Application Instructions for Lincrusta® wallcovering
Recommended adhesive
Lincrusta® glue (stir well, do not dilute). Apply evenly with a 3-4 inch short bristle paint brush, ensuring the edges are well coated. When pasting long lengths, it may be necessary for two people to apply the adhesive to prevent the adhesive from drying out. A mohair paint roller can also be used to “speed up” the application. Hang the lengths immediately after pasting.

1. Application instructions for Lincrusta® Wallcoverings
Match the pattern on each length. Cut the individual lengths to size adding an extra few inches for trimming at top and bottom.

Trim off the selvedge and undercut the edges using a knife and straight edge. (When handling Lincrusta® care should be taken to avoid surface damage).

Sponge the back with warm water and leave to soak for 20-30 mins. (For best results place lengths back to back while soaking). Soaking expands the material to its fullest extent and helps prevent the formation of blisters when lengths are being hung.

After soaking, wipe the back of each length with a dry cloth to remove any surplus water then apply Lincrusta® Glue. Apply evenly with a 3-4 inch short bristle dry paint brush ensuring the edges are well coated (For extra long lengths the adhesive can be applied more speedily by using a mohair paint roller). If the glue is a little thick to work, stir well but do not dilute.

Apply length to the surface and smooth down with a cloth pad or 4” rubber roller. At the lower edge mark the length at each edge of the strip, then place a piece of hardboard behind the paper and cut off to the exact length with a straight edge and knife.

Sponge off any surplus adhesive from the surface of the Lincrusta®.

2. Application instructions for a Lincrusta® Dado
a) Prepare surface as for Lincrusta® Wallcoverings and cross-line using an all-purpose adhesive containing fungicide.
b) Measure the height of the Dado panel. Mark a horizontal line along the wall above the skirting board to the height of the Dado panel.
c) Hang the panels to the line following instructions as for Lincrusta®. (Note: Dado panels are ready trimmed).
d) Finish top edge by applying border with Lincrusta® glue. 




3. Application of a Lincrusta® Frieze
Where to start
Carefully plan the most suitable point by marking the centre of the main feature wall. Ensure that the centre of the pattern is on the centre mark . Measure to each corner and cut the first length to size. Continue matching the pattern with other lengths around the room, finishing at the least obvious corner.

Pasting the lengths
Step 1 Cut the Frieze into the required lengths, matching the pattern where necessary . Allow 2 inches at each end for final trimming.
Step 2 Using a sharp knife and straight edge, trim the Lincrusta® to width of new or existing frieze (protect the work table with a strip of hardboard under the material when trimming or cutting Lincrusta®).
Step 3 Sponge the back of each length with warm water and leave flat to soak for 20-30 minutes (for best results place the length back to back while soaking). When soaking longer lengths of frieze, carefully fold the Lincrusta® over back to back, “loop” the material at the folds, as creasing may cause cracking and surface damage . Soaking expands the material to its fullest extent and helps to prevent the formation of blisters when hanging the lengths.
Step 4 After soaking wipe the back of each length with a dry cloth to remove any surplus water.
Step 5 Mark and cut each individual length to fit accurately at each corner.

Application
Apply Lincrusta® adhesive and carefully place the lengths of Frieze into position. Press down with a warm, wet cloth pad. Working from the centre to the edges in order to obtain perfect adhesion and remove any air bubbles (it is advisable that two people hold and support the Frieze when hanging lengths over 6 feet long).
Sponge off any surplus adhesive from the surface of the Lincrusta®.

Corners - Internal Angles
Do not attempt to fit Lincrusta® around an internal angle. The length should be cut to fit at the corner, match the pattern with the following lengths and cut to fit neatly at the corner.

Corners - External Angles
Hanging Lincrusta® around an external angle is only practical where the corners are gently rounded. When the angles are sharp, the Lincrusta® should be cut to finish at the corner and the remaining strip hung to make the join as neat at possible.
After fixing at the corner, gaps at the join should be filled using Linseed oil putty.
The Lincrusta® Frieze should be left to dry for at least 24 hours before painting.

5. Decorating Lincrusta®
Before painting, the surface should be wiped with white spirit to remove any grease.
Oil-based paints are recommended when decorating Lincrusta®.
For a water based system, coat as follows:
Undercoat: Water Based Acrylic Primer Undercoat.
Top coat: Silk or Matt Emulsion or Water Based Eggshell.

Decoration to achieve wood effects
As an alternative to painting Lincrusta®, many patterns particularly the wood effects may be decorated with the scumble and wipe technique.
Proprietary brands of scumbles are suitable. Thin the scumble according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Application
Apply the scumble evenly to a small area at a time – usually not more than two square metres. Then before the scumble has set, take a cotton cloth folded in the form of a pad and wipe the scumble from the surface leaving it in the intended grain and detail. The strength of wiping is determined by the depth of finish required. The final wipe should always follow the same direction (with the grain in the case of wood effects) this will prevent uneven streaks of colour.
For the protection of this type of decoration we recommend a coat of Eggshell Varnish.

Subsequent Decoration
At any time the surface may be darkened by cleaning the surface to remove any dirt and grease then re-scumble as above. To re-decorate to a lighter shade, the material can be painted with a suitable base colour, brushing out well. Two thin coats are preferable to one of normal consistency. On this new ground a light shade of scumble may be applied and wiped in the normal manner.
